ADHD
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a neurodevelopmental disorder that begins in childhood but can continue into adulthood. An individual with ADHD may have trouble with such things as focus, impulse control, or hyperactivity. There are three types: Predominately Inattentive Presentation, Predominately Hyperactive Impulsive Presentation, or Combined. In children and adolescents, this can affect them at school, with relationships, or with peers due to difficulty sustaining attention and trouble with impulsivity. In adults it can impact one’s ability to maintain attention, time manage themselves, meet deadlines, remember information, sit still, and so forth. Although there is no cure for ADHD, compensatory strategies can be taught and learned to help better manage it. Reduction in symptoms and improved functioning are usually achieved through medication management, psychoeducation, skills training, and psychotherapy like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).
